An interview to a friend I met during my trip in Ecuador.

Welcome to Meet My Friends, a series of interviews with people I met during my trips, special people who became my friends. I enjoy meeting new people while travelling, which is why I often volunteer during my trips. I think it is important to meet local people to know more about the culture of the place you visit, and sometimes you meet people with fascinating stories. In these interviews, I want you to know a bit about my friends and their countries, their stories and why they are special to me.
This interview is with Edison. He is
’s best friend, and this time she conducted the interview. I met him during my stay in Ecuador, where I volunteered for the Chimborazo Extremo, a cycling race he organises. He is a very interesting person, I think he lived 2 or 3 lives in one. You will know what I mean by reading this interview, which you can find in English and in Spanish.

Please introduce yourself: Where are you from, where are you now, what do you do, and what does a typical day look like?
Hello, I’m Edison Baldeón, born in Riobamba, Ecuador. Right now, I live in Riobamba. I run a tour operator called Biking Spirit, a family business specializing in cycling and hiking tours, mainly in the Chimborazo area, which is Ecuador’s iconic mountain. I’m also a National Tourism Guide, so guiding tourists privately for agencies that request my services complements my main activity.
A typical day starts at 5:00 AM—that’s when I go for a walk with my pack of six dogs. Then, I feed them, clean up, and depending on whether I have a tour, I usually leave around 7:30 AM and return in the afternoon. If I don’t have tours, I spend the morning cycling, then cooking, which I enjoy, and spending time with my partner, either handling personal matters or office work.
What are your best memories from your time as the manager of a rock band?
I was the manager of a death metal band called Necrofobia from 1992 to 2008. That was a very interesting time in my life because of the trips we took, touring all over the country, and even playing internationally at a concert in Cali, Colombia, in 2000—a great achievement for an underground band 25 years ago!
I was also involved in producing a demo rehearsal (Desangrar Dioses), a professional tape (Omnipotente), a digipack CD (Dios Verdugo), and another CD (Dark, Deep & Eternal). It was incredible to have lived through those days. I eventually parted ways with the band for personal reasons, but they are still active, and I keep in regular contact with the drummer.
How did you start your activism in animal protection? What are your main motivations? Tell us about your dogs.
In my family, we’ve always had dogs; they’ve been part of our lives. In 1999, I carried out my first rescue and got involved as a volunteer at a private shelter in my city. I spent 10 years helping there. We worked finding homes and families to adopt the animals. Unfortunately, in Ecuador, people aren’t used to adopting, and if they do, they often look for specific breeds and genders.
I also organized low-cost sterilization campaigns for dogs and cats every month with the help of a veterinary clinic called SNAP. Additionally, I gave awareness talks on responsible pet ownership whenever I was invited. The shelter was eventually relocated near Quito, which marked the end of my time there. Now, I help occasionally in two places that rescue dogs.
At one point, I had 10 dogs at home and three in foster care. Over time, six of them passed away due to old age. Currently, I have six with me and one under my care living elsewhere. They are an important part of my life. My main motivation has always been, and always will be, to give visibility to animals, advocate for ethical ownership, prevent mistreatment and abuse, and ensure they have a dignified life in this world.
What is your life like as a cyclist? Is it just your job, or is it something more?
Cycling is a way of life. It’s my hobby, my way of staying fit, my job, my social circle… I truly believe that a big part of my life revolves around two wheels.
How did Chimborazo Extremo start? What are the biggest lessons and proudest moments? What does it mean to reach the 20th edition of the race?
Chimborazo Extremo started from a conversation with a good friend, Rodrigo Donoso, with whom I used to work. It was spontaneous—we decided to organize the race because he was the administrator of the Urbina Station, which functioned as a tourist lodge, and he also managed the Chimborazo refuges, the race’s finish line. The main attraction and challenge is reaching 4,850 meters of altitude on a bike, making it Ecuador’s highest cycling race.
The first edition took place in April 2006, with 56 participants. Each year, it grew. Back then, social media wasn’t as widespread, so we relied on phone calls, emails, and a little bit of Facebook, along with support from bike shops. The goal was to promote adventure tourism in the Riobamba area and mountain biking as a sport—something we’ve successfully achieved over the years.
Every year has been a learning experience. The most important thing has been having the support of my two race partners, Jaime Romero and Galo Tamayo—without them, the event wouldn’t be possible. Something that makes me proud: first, the friendships I’ve made through cycling, and second, keeping the race going for 20 consecutive years (even in 2020, during COVID), with full registration for the last 10 editions.
Twenty years is twenty years—the time has flown by! The 2025 race is on June 7, and I hope it turns out to be wonderful as it always has.
What is your favorite part of guiding tourists on Chimborazo?
To me, it doesn’t feel like a job—it’s a hobby, which is why I enjoy every moment of it. I love this mountain; it’s been my second home for 26 years of guiding tourists. The most important thing for me is promoting my region and country, telling the story of the mountain, and, when cycling down, giving visitors a unique experience from the closest point to the sun—something that makes us proud. Seeing their happy faces at the end is the best memory I can take from their journey on Tayta Chimborazo (Father Chimborazo in Kichwa language).
Riobamba isn’t a top tourist destination in Ecuador. What would you say to encourage travelers to visit this area?
It’s a shame that, despite having five out of 10 of Ecuador’s highest mountains surrounding the city, Riobamba remains just a stopover rather than a destination. This is the result of years of poor promotion and a lack of commitment from local authorities who are more focused on politics than on long-term tourism development. Other issues—such as litter, a lack of tourism services, bad road conditions, and stray animals—also make the city less appealing.
Additionally, some tourists don’t respect protected areas, which further harms the region. If Riobamba is to become a true destination, we need to work with a long-term vision.
Tell us about a place or experience outside the typical tourist circuit that people shouldn’t miss when visiting Ecuador.
Ecuador, in general, is unique—its landscapes, food, and friendly people make for an unforgettable experience, beyond just its historical, cultural, and natural attractions.
Your next trip is fully paid—where would you go?
Something I really want to do someday is return to Huaraz in Peru and visit the Huayhuash mountain range. That’s a pending adventure I need to check off my list.
If you could be a character from a movie, who would you be?
I really like movies like The Lord of the Rings, so I’d probably choose a character from that kind of universe.
Por favor, preséntate: ¿de dónde eres, dónde estás ahora, a qué te dedicas y cómo es un día típico para ti?
Hola, soy Edison Baldeón nacido en Riobamba, Ecuador; ahora mismo sigo viviendo en Riobamba; tengo una Tour Operadora que se llama Biking Spirit, es una empresa familiar que se dedica a hacer tours de ciclismo y caminatas principalmente en el área del Chimborazo, que es la montaña símbolo del Ecuador, además soy Guía Nacional de Turismo, así que es un complemento a mi actividad ya que guío turistas de manera privada para agencias que solicitan mis servicios.
Un día típico comienza a las 5h00 ese momento salgo a caminar con mi manada de 6 perros; luego está alimentarlos, limpiar y depende si tengo trabajo normalmente salgo alrededor de las 7h30 y retorno en la tarde o sino ocupo la mañana en salir en bicicleta, luego cocinar que es algo que me gusta y compartir con mi pareja, temas personales o de oficina.
¿Cuáles son tus mejores recuerdos de la época como mánager de la banda de rock?
Bueno yo fui manager de una banda de Death Metal llamada Necrofobia desde 1992 – 2008 fue una época muy interesante de mi vida por los viajes que hacíamos girando por todo el país e incluso tocaron internacionalmente un concierto en Cali (Colombia 2000), un gran logro para una banda subterránea hace 25 años; además de haber trabajado en la producción de un demo ensayo (Desangrar Dioses), un tape profesional (Omnipotente); CD Digipack (Dios Verdugo) y un CD (Dark, Deep & Eternal), fue algo increíble haber vivido esos días y bueno me separé de ellos por asuntos personales; aún siguen activos y tengo contacto regulara con el baterista de la banda.
¿Cómo empezaste tu activismo en defensa de los animales? ¿Cuáles son tus principales motivaciones? Cuéntanos sobre tus perros.
En mi familia toda la vida hemos tenido perros han sido parte nuestra, en 1999 hice mi primer rescate y me involucré en ser voluntario en un albergue privado que existió acá en mi ciudad, tuve un período de 10 años ayudando en ese lugar, lapso en el cual se buscaba hogar a que fueran adoptados, lastimosamente en Ecuador la gente no tiene la costumbre de adoptar animales y si lo hacen buscan razas y sexo específico de animales; además organizaba cada mes con la ayuda de una clínica veterinaria llamada SNAP esterilizaciones de perros y gatos a bajo costo y también daba charlas de concientización sobre tenencia responsable donde me invitaban, el albergue fue trasladado cerca a Quito y ahí terminé mi labor; ahora ayudo en 2 lugares que rescatan perros de manera ocasional. De mis perros, pues llegué a tener 10 en la casa y 3 en lugares de tránsito, de ellos 6 fallecieron por la edad, tengo 6 conmigo y 1 encargada, son parte importante de mi vida. Mi principal motivación fue, es y será hacer visible a los animales en general, por un trato ético hacia ellos, por no maltratarlos y/o abusarlos, para que tengan una vida digna en su paso por este mundo.
¿Cómo es tu vida como ciclista? ¿Es tu trabajo o algo más que eso?
Para mí el ciclismo en general es un estilo de vida, es mi pasatiempo, una forma de mantenerme físicamente, mi trabajo, mi círculo de amigos, realmente pienso que gran parte de mi vida gira alrededor de las dos ruedas
¿Cómo surgió Chimborazo Extremo? ¿Cuáles son las principales lecciones y momentos de orgullo? ¿Qué significa para ti llegar a la vigésima edición de la carrera?
Chimborazo Extremo salió de una conversación con un buen amigo (Rodrigo Donoso) con quién trabajaba, fue algo espontáneo y decidimos hacer la carrera porque él era administrador de la Estación de Urbina lugar de salida que funcionaba como un albergue para turistas y también tenía a cargo los refugios del Chimborazo el lugar de llegada; el principal atractivo y desafio es llegar pedaleando a 4850 metros de altura, es la carrera de bicis más alta del Ecuador; la primera edición fue en abril de 2006 con 56 participantes, cada año iba creciendo, en aquellos días no había la facilidad de internet y sus redes sociales, todo se hacía por teléfono, correo electrónico, Facebook muy poco difundido y la ayuda de tiendas de ciclismo; el objetivo claro fue promover el turismo de aventura en el área de Riobamba y el ciclismo de montaña como deporte, cosas que hemos logrado a lo largo de los años.
Ha sido un aprendizaje cada año con la carrera, lo más importante ha sido tener el respaldo de mis dos socios de la carrera (Jaime Romero y Galo Tamayo) sin quienes no sería posible hacer el evento; me quedo con dos cosas como motivo de orgullo, uno es haber conocido muchos amigos por la bicicleta y dos el mantener por 20 años consecutivos (incluido el 2020 por el covid) con cupos llenos los últimos 10 años de carrera.
20 años son 20 años, el tiempo ha pasado de una manera muy rápida, este 2025 la carrera es el 7 de junio y espero que salga bien como ha sido nuestra característica.
¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de guiar a los turistas en el Chimborazo?
Para mi realmente no es un trabajo, es un hobbie y eso hace que disfrute todo el tiempo de lo que hago, yo amo esa montaña porque ha sido mi segunda casa por 26 años que llevo guiando turistas, lo más importante para mí es vender mi región y país, contarles la historia de la montaña en general y si bajan en bicicleta que vivan una experiencia única desde el punto más cercano al sol que es algo que nos hace sentir orgullo, al final ver sus caras de alegría es el mejor recuerdo que me puedo quedar de su paso por el Tayta Chimborazo
Riobamba no es un destino turístico principal de Ecuador, ¿qué les dirías a los turistas para animarlos a visitar más esta zona del país?
Es una lástima que teniendo 5 de las 10 montañas más altas del Ecuador alrededor de la ciudad, Riobamba sea solo una ciudad de paso, es el resultado de años de un mal manejo de una verdadera promoción de la ciudad y sus montañas en el exterior, autoridades sin verdadero compromiso que solo hacen política que quieren aprovechar ciertos momentos y luego está una serie de cosas que hacen poco interesante que la gente se quede, la basura, pocos servicios turísticos, la vías en malas condiciones, animales abandonados, en ciertas ocasiones la masa de turistas que llegan y no respetan las áreas protegidas; hay que trabajar manteniendo un objetivo a largo plazo a que la ciudad sea un verdadero destino para los visitantes.
Cuéntanos sobre un lugar o experiencia fuera del circuito turístico que la gente no debería perderse al visitar Ecuador.
Creo que en general el Ecuador es único por sus paisajes, su comida, su gente amable, es algo que un visitante se lleva de recuerdo como experiencia a parte de los atractivos históricos, culturales y naturales.
Tu próximo viaje ya está pagado, ¿a dónde irías?
Algo que quiero hacer algún momento es volver a Huaraz en Perú y visitar la cordillera del Huayhuash, es un pendiente que debo hacer.
Si pudieras ser un personaje de una película, ¿quién serías?
Realmente me gustan mucho las películas al estilo El Señor de los Anillos, así que un personaje de esas características seria algo de mi tipo.
